Windows server 2016 standard rok hyper-v free. Windows Server 2016 Grants 2 VMs, are the licences included?- Licencing with Hyper-V - Microsoft Q&A
KVM is free. You can use the full blown GUI product as your hypervisor if you wish and it's still free as it doesn't count towards your two allowed OSE's unless you use it for anything beyond being only a hypervisor and then it counts as an OSE and must be licensed as such.
I can see getting erroneous info from a small reseller, but from Microsoft themselves and the big name retailers like CDW is a huge problem. And depending on the type of license, I can even run other editions if the downgrade rights allow it. I know competency partner licenses do not allow downgrade rights, so in this instance all the OSEs on this server would have to be Datacenter I believe.
Is this also true if running a different hypervisor, say ESXI? Ive been under the impression for the past 6 months that I am allowed to run 2 virtual machines per copy of server standard, so I used those two VMs to run 2 more individually licensed copies of server standard. It was not untill last week that I realized I can run more Virtual machines with the SAME hypervisor instance but I thought even then I was allowed only 6 virtual machines.
Now rereading these posts it sounds like I can run two virtual machines of windows server standard per licensed copy so I should theoretically be able to run 6 instances with my 3 licenses and then as many virtual machines of say linux or windows 10 that I want.
I have been clearly required to license each virtual machine with a key. Am I allowed to use the same license for two VMs on seperate hypervisors if the total of cores does not exceed 16? Windows Server Essentials does not support virtualization. Client access licenses are not required.
Windows Server Essentials is well-integrated with Office hosted services. In other words, you can install Windows Server Standard on a host machine and run two virtual machines with Windows Server Standard as a guest OS. Windows Server Standard running on a host used for virtualization as a hypervisor can be used only to install Hyper-V to run VMs.
Using the host OS as a full-featured server with two virtual servers is not allowed. You cannot use three full-featured servers one physical and two virtual if you have the Standard license that covers two VMs and one physical server. The licensed Datacenter edition covers Windows Server installed on a host and allows you to run an unlimited number of virtual machines with Windows Server installed as a guest OS. A Windows Server Essentials vs Standard comparison is outside the scope of this blog post.
CAL licenses are required for both Standard and Datacenter editions. For example, if you have licensed Windows Server Standard for all processor cores of a physical server and install Windows Server Standard on a host with the Hyper-V role enabled, then you can run two VMs with Windows Server Standard.
If you need to run 4 virtual machines on a server, then you need to buy one more license a set of two-core licenses to cover all cores for this server the total number of VMs is four and Windows Server Standard is used in this example. One Standard license covers two virtual machines. If you need to run 4 VMs on a physical server that has two 8-core processors, you must buy 16 dual-core Standard licenses for Windows Server Two license sets cover all cores twice and allow you to run 4 VMs.
If you need to run an odd number of VMs on a host, you need to buy licenses for the next even number of VMs. If you need to run 4 VMs on the same physical server that has two 8-core processors but with the Windows Server Datacenter license, you need to buy 8 dual-core Datacenter licenses for Windows Server VM licensing order: Physical cores must be licensed first and only after that virtual machines must be licensed.
Taking into account the current price for Windows Server licenses, it may be better to buy Windows Server Standard licenses if you are going to run up to 12 virtual machines on a single physical server.
If you need to run 14 VMs or more, the more rational decision is to buy Windows Server Datacenter. Application Transformation. Converged Cloud. Energy and Sustainability Management. Virtual machines VMs run in its own isolated environment. VMs are self-contained units that can easily be moved from one physical computer to another physical computer. At the time of creating virtual machine, the hardware is abstracted and multiple virtualized hardware environments are created. On the virtual environment you can run a complete copy of operating system OS separately.

You have got two options: Generation 1 and Generation 2. Generation 1 supports both bit and bit processor architectures. Generation 2 supports only bit processor architecture. Assign the memory based on MB in the box next to startup memory. Put a mark in the vacant box next to Use dynamic Memory for the virtual machine. It is a very useful option. Selecting this option, virtual machine uses memory dynamically.
